Preparing for record year of colostrum supply.
Westland’s farmer suppliers look set to create another record this season with their supply of colostrum, the nutrient-dense, antibody-rich fluid produced by cows in late pregnancy and the first few days after birth.
Our colostrum production reached a record last season after we encouraged our farmer suppliers to consider supplying colostrum to support the growing demand for this high-quality product on world markets. Given the recognition of the value of colostrum, we are looking to top last year’s production, setting an even higher record of surplus colostrum supply.
Positive signs for season ahead
The indicators of us achieving this are positive. Cows on our suppliers’ farms went into winter in good condition following a mild autumn-early winter period. Calving traditionally begins in late-July, peaking through August and September to coincide with warmer conditions and spring grass growth.
We are preparing for a bumper year. In a six-week period in August and September, our transport and operations teams will collect and deliver fresh colostrum daily to our processing facility to ensure consistently high-quality products - an approach we have maintained during Westland’s more than 23 years of producing colostrum.
Market momentum building for colostrum

Conversations with our customers have centred around the strength and consistency of the New Zealand grass-fed dairy system, along with a broader appreciation for a clean, minimally processed approach. We are focused on keeping this simple and well-managed which starts with a consistent and reliable supply.
This aligns with market requirements where there’s strong growth in convenient, easy-to-use formats combined with more targeted functional positioning around areas like immunity, recovery, and daily performance.These formats also tend to favour clean ingredients, and our strong grass-fed foundation has been resonating well with the consumer.
